Theology

On the three days eve of the total solar eclipse in Oklahoma we have one final introduction topic on Hebrews to touch, and that’s theology. We will begin in chapter one of Hebrews next month. Principle 2 of Celebrate Recovery is continually in the cross-hairs (no pun intended) when Scripture and Recovery meet,

Principle 2: “Earnestly believe that God exists…and that he (God) has the power to help me recover.”

Paul Ellingworth’s commentary on Hebrews is very helpful and recommended to those who want a deep dive in the message of this book. Two theological topics he points out in Hebrews are the underdeveloped yet effective reference to the Holy Spirit, and the emphasis on salvation that applies to the past, present, and future. The author of Hebrew states clearly that the activity of the Holy Spirit through “signs,” “wonders,” and “miracles” are deliberately presented to creation to generate a saving relationship.

 Hebrews 2:4 (CSB)

4 At the same time, God also testified by signs and wonders, various miracles, and distributions of gifts from the Holy Spirit according to his will.

There is a ritual tone in the Hebrews letter (Heb. 9:11–14; 10:4–10). Purification of sins is declared in past tense language (Heb. 1:3 “making purification” is an aorist participle), indicating the sacrifice Christ made on the Cross is a completed event that continues to have application in the present. The Holy Spirit has an active role in our reception of salvation! The author of Hebrews states the reception of the Cross event is coupled with renewed acts of service—serving God and others is an indication of an individual’s new life in Christ,

Hebrews 9:14 (CSB)

14 how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without blemish to God, cleanse our consciences from dead works so that we can serve the living God?

The appropriate response to the work of God by way of the Holy Spirit and Incarnate Christ is service to the community of faith. If you are interested in such service come visit us at Henderson Hills on a Monday night for dinner and a meeting or contact our office.
