The Better Hope, Part 3

In recovery a dependable “higher power” is key.

The uncovering of a “better hope” [κρείττονος ἐλπίδος] that is the focus the author of Hebrews takes on in chapter 7 (Heb. 7:18–19) is fully revealed in the last paragraph (v. 23–28). The contrast between the human (Levitical) priest (v. 23) and that of Christ as the Great High Priest returns to highlight the Incarnate Son as the most pure, and most dependable of all priests. He is different,

Hebrews 7:23–24 (CSB)

23Now many have become Levitical priests, since they are prevented by death from remaining in office.

24But because he remains forever, he holds his priesthood permanently.

Many Levitical Priests were needed due to their limited humanity—"death prevented them from remaining in office” (v. 23). They had to perform sacrifice for their own sin prior to offering sacrifice for others (v. 27). Sacrifice was required on a continual basis (v. 27) and the Levitical Priest was ordained by a law that “appoints men who are weak” (v. 28).

In contrast Christ holds a priesthood that is permanent (v. 24), he remains forever (v. 24), and he doesn’t need to “offer sacrifices every day” (v. 27).

Hebrews 7:25 (CSB)

25Therefore, he is able to save completely those who come to God through him, since he always lives to intercede for them.

Christ offered himself as the sacrifice once for all time (v. 27) so those who believe have a permanent place in relationship with God. Because he is one person who died once for all, that death is sufficient for all people who believe. Quite simply, when you believe in him as the permanent source for your relationship with God, you are saved. In recovery—and in life—this provides a “higher power” with a dependable foundation and a source for wisdom, encouragement, and love in its purity.
