Sanctified by Christ’s One Sacrifice (part two of two)
Last month in part one the central feature of Recovery—the Inventory—was highlighted to help find the healing agent living in the twelve steps. Hebrews 10 agrees that the healer is God (the Father) through the Son (Jesus Christ) by the power of the Holy Spirit. The sacrifice of the Incarnate Son is the generation, the holy force, that instills change in the lives of those believing in Him and his Cross and resurrection. Without that sacrifice, and without that bloodshed, the steps of recovery are expressionless.
Verses 19 through 25 echoes chapter 4 of Hebrews—access to the Holy of Holies is made available through the blood,
Hebrews 10:19–20 (CSB)
19Therefore, brothers and sisters, since we have boldness to enter the sanctuary through the blood of Jesus— 20he has inaugurated for us a new and living way through the curtain (that is, through his flesh)—
The result is a changed person—a heart “sprinkled clean”,
Hebrews 10:22 (CSB)
22let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed in pure water.
And the new person experiences hope,
Hebrews 10:23 (CSB)
23Let us hold on to the confession of our hope without wavering, since he who promised is faithful.
The author closed this set of verses reminding us of how this change draws believers together in community.
A tenant of Celebrate Recovery is that “our sin is not our identity”—we find our identity in Christ. The sacrifice of the Holy One is the change point—the reset for recovery that offers the boldness needed to inventory the past and for present and future hope. Even though we inventory in recovery—God is the change agent. Come join our ministry on Monday night, any Monday night, for Christ centered community.
