Run the Race—Endurance is Key

Hebrews 11 concludes with examples of imperfect people whose faith endured weakness and waiting. Hebrews 12 begins by reminding us that their testimony now surrounds us as a "great cloud of witnesses." Their lives encourage us to continue our own race of faith.

Hebrews 12:1 (CSB)

1Therefore, since we also have such a large cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let us lay aside every hindrance and the sin that so easily ensnares us. Let us run with endurance the race that lies before us,

Recovery teaches us that some things must be left behind if we are going to move forward. Some hindrances are sinful choices. Others are attitudes, fears, resentments, pride, or unhealthy habits that slow our spiritual progress. The author does not tell us to run faster. He tells us to run with endurance. The goal is not perfection but perseverance.

Hebrews 12:2 (CSB)

2keeping our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of our faith. For the joy that lay before him, he endured the cross, despising the shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

The Christian life—and the Christian recovery life—are not sustained by willpower alone. They are sustained through a growing dependence on Christ and the daily practice of following Him. When setbacks come and discouragement grows, Jesus remains both the example and source of our strength. Keep moving forward. One faithful step today is still progress.
