Forward-Looking, Forward-Thinking Faith

The author of Hebrews returns to Abraham—a great figure in your Bible—to deepen our understanding of forward-looking faith. In Genesis, we learn that Abraham was called to leave his homeland and go to the “promised land”—Canaan—the place the nation of Israel would eventually inherit (Gen. 12:1–4; Exod. 3:8). Scripture tells us Abraham had no idea where he was going.

Hebrews 11:8 (CSB)
“By faith Abraham, when he was called, obeyed and set out for a place that he was going to receive as an inheritance. He went out, even though he did not know where he was going.”

It also tells us he lived in tents—as did Isaac and Jacob—while they looked forward to the city God would build. Sarah joined them—though she was past the age to bear children, her faith looked forward to offspring “as numerous as the stars,” and God provided.

Faith led Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and Sarah to keep moving toward the goal—even though it was unknown. Otherwise, when challenges came, they could have easily turned back.

Hebrews 11:15 (CSB)
“If they were thinking about where they came from, they would have had an opportunity to return.”

Faith planted in them a desire to go where they were called—even when it was difficult and uncertain. Faith assured them their God would meet them there. It was a place God prepared for them because they were His children (Heb. 11:16).

The leadership of this Recovery ministry knows what you desire—sobriety from hurts, hang-ups, and habits—is not easy to reach. Let their journey toward the “city” encourage you to put one foot in front of the other in faith.

We have a great testimony lined up for you at Gateway Community Church as we meet off-site this Monday.
